TOPIC: PARENTAL OBSERVATION

Memorise :
When they came to Reuel their father, he said, how is it that you have come so soon today? – (Exodus 2:18).

Read: Exodus 2:15-18; Genesis 27:18-20 (NKJV)

Exodus 2:15-18 NKJV
[15] When Pharaoh heard of this matter, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh and dwelt in the land of Midian; and he sat down by a well.

[16] Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters. And they came and drew water, and they filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.

[17] Then the shepherds came and drove them away; but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock.

[18] When they came to Reuel their father, he said, “How is it that you have come so soon today?”

Genesis 27:18-20 NKJV
[18] So he went to his father and said, “My father.” And he said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?”

[19] Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn; I have done just as you told me; please arise, sit and eat of my game, that your soul may bless me.”

[20] But Isaac said to his son, “How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?” And he said, “Because the Lord your God brought it to me.”

EXPOSITION:
Isaac and Jethro, as parents, challenged their children upon their return from errands; every task has its time frame. They questioned their children’s early arrival; they were observant as fathers. The tasks assigned to the children weren’t simple. Esau was told to hunt and cook for his dad (Genesis 27:3-4) while Jethro’s daughters were to fill their water troughs (Exodus 2:16). Both tasks demanded time and effort. Also, Eliezer also tested Rebecca’s dedication by having her water 10 camels, each capable of drinking up to seven gallons of water (Genesis 24:10,19). In both situations, their dads weren’t ready for them when they showed up, sparking an interesting question (Genesis 27:20; Exodus 2:18). The use of the words “quickly” and “today” suggested their actions were typicals. The takeaway is that they were questioned rather than praised excessively when they achieved things faster than expected. This is unlike some parents who overlook their kids’ inappropriate actions. What matters more to you: the way things are done or the outcome? Do you focus on how your kids (biological or spiritual) achieve results, or do you celebrate them without questioning?

PRAYER POINTS:
1. Lord, help me to be attentive to the needs of the children in my care.

2. I will never falter in caring for my children, in Jesus’ name.

3. Lord, grant my children the patience to follow the proper procedures in times like these.

SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY: CAC GHB 520

1. By cool Siloam’s shady rill
How sweet the lily grows!
How sweet the breath, beneath the hill,
Of Sharon’s dewy rose!

2. Lo! Such the child whose early feet
The paths of peace have trod,
Whose secret heart with influence sweet
Is upward drawn to God.

3. By cool Siloam’s shady rill
The lily must decay,
The rose that blooms beneath the hill
Must shortly fade away.

4. O Thou whose infant feet were found
Within Thy Father’s shrine,
Whose years, with changeless virtue crowned,
Were all alike divine;

5. Dependent on Thy bounteous breath,
We seek Thy grace alone,
In childhood, manhood, age, and death,
To keep us still Thine own.

Amen.
